How to uninstall Content Manager safely
Uninstalling Content Manager is a three-minute job that comes down to restoring the default Assetto Corsa launcher and deleting the executable. This guide covers the safe removal path, what to keep, what to delete, and how to make sure Steam goes back to the original launcher cleanly.
What "uninstalling Content Manager" actually means
Uninstalling Content Manager is not the standard Windows uninstall most people expect. The launcher is a portable application — a single executable in a folder of your choosing, with its settings in a sibling Cfg folder. Removing it means deleting those files, not running an installer wizard. There is no entry in Add or Remove Programs and no service to stop.
The single piece of preparation worth doing first is restoring the original Assetto Corsa launcher. The launcher replaces the default Kunos launcher as the program Steam calls when you press Play. Until that replacement is reversed, Steam keeps trying to launch the file you are about to delete, which is the only way the uninstall can produce an error. With the original launcher restored, the rest of the process is two clicks and a file deletion.
Your installed cars, tracks, skins and Custom Shader Patch files all live inside the Assetto Corsa directory, not the launcher folder. Removing the launcher does not touch any of that content; the original Kunos launcher will load the same game you have always had, minus the additional management features.
How to uninstall Content Manager — full procedure
Five steps from a working installation to a clean removal, with Steam returning to the original launcher.
-
Restore the original Assetto Corsa launcher inside the app
Open the launcher and go to Settings → Content Manager → Steam Integration. Choose Restore original launcher and apply. Steam will route the Play button back to the original Kunos launcher from your next click onwards. Doing this before deleting anything keeps your Steam library in a clean state.
-
Close the launcher fully
Quit the launcher from File → Exit, then check the Windows system tray for a hidden icon. Right-click and choose Exit if it is there. Windows locks the executable while the program is running, so the file cannot be removed until every instance is closed.
-
Delete the launcher executable
Open the folder where you placed Content Manager — typically inside the Assetto Corsa install directory or a chosen tools folder — and delete the executable. Because the launcher is portable, there is no Add or Remove Programs entry to use; deleting the file is the uninstall.
-
Decide what to do with the configuration folder
Content Manager stores its settings in a Cfg subfolder. If you intend to reinstall later and want your presets back, keep this folder. For a clean uninstall, delete it. The Cfg folder contains no game data — Assetto Corsa cars, tracks, replays and saves are untouched by removing it.
-
Confirm the default launcher works
Press Play on Assetto Corsa in Steam. The original Kunos launcher should open, ready to launch the game directly. If it does not appear, verify the Steam Integration restore step from earlier; you may need to re-launch the app briefly to flip the setting back before removing the executable.
What removing the launcher does not touch
The boundary between Content Manager and Assetto Corsa is clean. Knowing exactly what survives the uninstall makes the decision low-stakes.
- Your Assetto Corsa install. Every car, track, skin, app and replay stored in the game directory is untouched. The original Kunos launcher will load all of them after Content Manager is gone, exactly as it did before the launcher was added. Mods that were installed by hand and mods that Content Manager placed for you are both left in place.
- Custom Shader Patch. CSP files live inside the Assetto Corsa directory. They survive a launcher removal and continue to load with the original launcher. If you specifically want to remove CSP as well, do it through Content Manager's Custom Shader Patch section before deleting the launcher itself — it is considerably easier to remove the patch with the app still in place.
- Your Steam library. Removing the launcher does not affect Steam or Assetto Corsa's Steam installation in any way. Steam continues to track Assetto Corsa normally, the game's playtime and achievements are preserved, and you can reinstall Content Manager from the download page at any time.
If you change your mind
Reinstalling the launcher is the reverse of the procedure above. Download the executable from assettocorsa.club, drop it back into a folder of your choosing and run it. If you kept the Cfg subfolder, place it alongside the new executable before launching — the launcher will pick up your old settings, presets and server favourites without losing any of them.
If the Cfg folder was deleted, the first launch will be a fresh setup: point the app at your Assetto Corsa folder, allow it to index your content and configure Steam Integration to replace the default launcher again. The process is the same as a first-time install, which our download guide covers in full.
Uninstalling Content Manager — common questions
How do I uninstall Content Manager?
The app is a portable application, so uninstalling means deleting the executable from the folder you placed it in. Before that, restore the original Kunos launcher inside the launcher so Steam stops calling it, close the running launcher fully, then delete the file. The Cfg subfolder can be kept or removed depending on whether you plan to reinstall.
Does uninstalling Content Manager delete my Assetto Corsa mods?
No. Mods live inside the Assetto Corsa folder, not the launcher folder. Removing the launcher executable does not touch any installed cars, tracks, skins or apps. Custom Shader Patch files also remain in the Assetto Corsa directory. The original launcher loads the same content the next time you start the game.
Will uninstalling Content Manager remove Custom Shader Patch?
No. Custom Shader Patch is a separate set of files installed into the Assetto Corsa directory. Removing the launcher does not touch CSP, which means Assetto Corsa will still load with the patch active. To remove CSP as well, look for the Custom Shader Patch uninstall option inside the launcher before you remove it.
How do I bring back the default Assetto Corsa launcher?
Open the launcher, go to Settings → Content Manager → Steam Integration and choose Restore original launcher. Steam will then route Play back to the Kunos launcher. This step does not require uninstalling Content Manager — the original launcher is always preserved by the app and can be restored at any time.
Can I reinstall the launcher later?
Yes. Reinstalling the launcher is the same as installing it for the first time — download the executable from assettocorsa.club and run it. If you kept the previous Cfg folder, place it alongside the new executable to restore your old settings, presets and server favourites without losing any of them.
Is there an Add or Remove Programs entry for Content Manager?
No. The launcher does not register with the Windows Programs and Features list because it is a portable application with no installer. The uninstall is the deletion of the executable. This is the same model Custom Shader Patch and many sim-racing tools use, and it is part of why the install is so lightweight.
Or keep using it — that works too
Most players who consider uninstalling Content Manager end up keeping it once a specific problem is solved. If you arrived here because of an error or a setup issue, our common errors guide may have the fix.
