How to install car skins with Content Manager
Installing a car skin in Assetto Corsa takes about a minute with Content Manager. Download a skin archive, drag it onto the launcher, and switch liveries from the car detail page — no manual folder work required.
Types of skins in Assetto Corsa
The word "skin" covers several different things in Assetto Corsa, depending on the context. Understanding what each type is makes it easier to find and manage them.
| Type | What it is |
|---|---|
| Livery skins | A complete repaint of a car — different colours, sponsor logos, number plates. The most common type of skin. Often based on real racing liveries. |
| Driver skins | Replaces the driver model's suit, helmet and gloves. Packaged separately from the car skin in some mods; included in the same archive in others. |
| Extension skins (EXT) | Used by Custom Shader Patch to control material properties — paint metallic effect, window tint, light colour. Added to the skin folder alongside normal texture files. |
| Preview images | Not a skin type, but each skin has a preview image displayed in the car selector. Content Manager can regenerate missing previews. Content Manager Full includes bulk preview generation. |
How to install a skin with Content Manager
- 1 Download a skin from a trusted source
Skins are available on OverTake (overtake.gg) and many mod author pages. A skin archive is usually a small ZIP containing a folder named after the livery — for example "ferrari_laferrari_red_bull". Download the archive and keep it somewhere you can find it.
- 2 Drag the archive onto Content Manager
With Content Manager open, drag the downloaded skin archive onto the Content Manager window. The application reads the archive, identifies the car it belongs to and places the skin folder into the correct location inside the Assetto Corsa content directory automatically.
- 3 Open the car in the Content Manager library
Go to the Cars tab in Content Manager and find the car the skin belongs to. Click the car to open its detail page. The newly installed skin appears in the skin selector panel on the right side of the entry.
- 4 Select the skin in Quick Drive or the server setup
In Quick Drive or when joining an online server, select the car and choose the skin from the livery dropdown. The skin is immediately available — no restart is required. Online servers that restrict skins to specific liveries will override your selection with server-side data.
Where to download Assetto Corsa skins
The same sources that host car and track mods also host skins. The largest collection is on OverTake (overtake.gg), which has dedicated sections for skins with search by car model. Many car mod authors also release official livery packs from their own websites or Discord servers.
Some popular categories of skin:
- Real racing liveries — recreations of actual cars from GT3, Formula racing and touring car championships
- Fantasy liveries — fictional designs, often based on brands or inspired by real-world aesthetics
- Number plate skins — custom number-plate files for use in league racing where each driver needs a unique entry
- Personal liveries — one-off designs created by community members or ordered from livery designers
Car skins — common questions
How do I install a car skin in Assetto Corsa?
Download the skin archive — typically a ZIP file — from OverTake or the mod author's page. With Content Manager open, drag the archive onto the Content Manager window. The application identifies the skin, finds the correct car and places the livery files in the right folder automatically. The skin then appears in the car's entry in the library.
Where do Assetto Corsa skins go?
Car skins live inside the car's own folder in the Assetto Corsa content directory — specifically at assettocorsa\content\cars\[car_folder]\skins\[skin_folder]. Each skin is a subfolder containing texture files and a preview image. Content Manager handles this path automatically when you drag a skin archive onto it.
How do I switch between skins in Content Manager?
Open the Cars tab in Content Manager and click a car to view its detail page. A skin selector appears showing all installed skins for that car as small thumbnails. Click any skin to select it. Your selection carries into Quick Drive and stays set until you change it.
Can I use any skin on an online server?
It depends on the server. Many servers allow any skin from your local installation — your car appears with your chosen livery to other players. Some servers lock skins to a specific set, usually for league racing with required liveries. In those cases the server overrides your local selection.
Why does a skin show a broken preview image?
Skin preview images are separate files that need to be generated using the car's showroom. If a skin was installed without a preview, Content Manager shows a placeholder. Right-click the skin in the library and select the option to update or generate its preview.
How do I make my own skin for Assetto Corsa?
Start by finding the skin template for the car — most mod authors publish a DDS or PNG template alongside the car. Edit the template in Photoshop, GIMP or another image editor that supports DDS export. Save the finished texture as a DDS file, place it in a new skin folder inside the car's skins directory, and add a preview image. Content Manager will pick it up on the next library refresh.
Do skins require Custom Shader Patch?
Basic skins work without CSP — they replace the car's texture files regardless of what graphics mods are running. Some skins include extension config files that use CSP features such as paint metallic effects and window tint. Those extension files are ignored if CSP is not installed; the skin still works but without the extra material effects.
